It’s not a secret the nutrition education many residents receive is suboptimal. The Institute of Medicine and the Association of American Medical Colleges recommend medical students receive less than 30 hours of nutrition education. When these residents finally become physicians, some are equipped with little to no nutrition related knowledge. There is no shame to this seeing medical students do not learn medical nutrition therapy. What’s scary is that some residents and physicians think they are equipped to address all of their patients’ nutrition needs. It is important physicians refer their patients to dietitians seeing dietitians are the trained food and nutrition experts. In the meantime, it is important for practitioners to know about the function of vitamins and the foods they are found in.
