Today we will be looking at four (4) nutritional lab biomarkers which are used to detect malnutrition. Malnutrition is a popular topic in dietetics. A significant amount of patients end up developing malnutrition or being admitted to the hospital with malnutrition. There are many factors to consider when formatting a nutritional diagnosis for malnutrition and traditional laboratory values were a major part of that process.
So let me preface this by saying these laboratory biomarkers should NOT be used as an indicator of nutrition status. A low ALBUMIN is not a synonym for malnutrition. In today’s video we will take a look at ALBUMIN, PRE-ALBUMIN, TRANSFERRIN, and RETINAL BINDING PROTEIN. I’m going to walk you through each traditional tests and what affects their value.
